Figuration — the use of images — is a foundational tool for writing poetry and yet harder to wield than it seems. We will consider its basic operations and its complex uses, looking at it through three main lenses: the psychological image, the protean image, and the political/social image. We will ask: what’s the difference between describing and evoking? How is associative logic different from narrative logic? How do poetic images help us understand and feel the poems we read?
