Summer 2021 GT1000 Courses a Success for Students

GT1000, the first-year seminar course for incoming students, is the first experience that enrolled students have with Georgia Tech. Summer 2021 GT1000 courses saw an increase in student enrollment, allowing for three full Ivan Allen College courses. Two of the three concentrated on leadership, with the third titled “Analyzing Atlanta.” 

The GT1000 IAC summer courses, which concluded on July 27, aimed to create a successful and effective transition for incoming first-year students. The courses provided students with the opportunity to meet peers within Ivan Allen College, and specifically their major, to form future study groups and develop a supportive environment. 

The courses taught students how to optimize the opportunities available at Georgia Tech. From learning about the GT 1-on-1 Tutoring Centers to applying for positions on CareerBuzz, the courses strove to help students utilize the tools available to make the most of their time at the Institute. 

This summer, guest speakers from Ivan Allen’s career educators, including Kyle Poe and Camille Liverpool, explained useful tips on drafting resumes and cover letters for future success in career findings. 

Instructors Elizabeth Miller and Leslie Ross highlighted the students’ important skills through the CliftonStrengths Assessment and helped them create LinkedIn profiles for maximum individual success. 

The course's teaching assistants - Anaïs Acree, Skyler Edwards, Taylor Gray, Hailey Martin, Micah Maxie, and Lydia Wiederholt - created social events, from Make Your Own Ice Cream Trivia on National Ice Cream Day, to Georgia Tech Scavenger Hunts which focused on creating a positive and social view of campus
