• Besedes Publishes Research on Multilateral Environmental Agreements

  The International Tax and Public Finance journal has accepted for publication a new paper by Tibor Besedes, an associate professor in the School of Economics, which examines the economic determinants of multilateral environmental agreements. The paper was co-authored with Erik P. Johnson, a former faculty member in SOE, and Xinping Tian, a Ph.D. alumnus of SOE.  

  

• 2020 Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Graduate Paper Competition Winners Announced

  January 28, 2020

  The student author of a paper examining sexism’s impact in women’s health research, as well as other authors of papers on cyber warfare, postharvest loss and technology development were honored Tuesday Jan. 30 as winners of the 2020 Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts Graduate Paper Competition.

• Genevieve Onyiuke-Kennedy Wins 2020 Southeastern Writing Center Undergraduate Peer Tutor of the Year Award

• Georgia Tech Poet Ilya Kaminsky Wins National Jewish Book Award

  Ilya Kaminsky, the Bourne Chair in Poetry in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, has won the 2019 National Jewish Book Award in poetry for his book, Deaf Republic.

  

• Ivan Allen College Archive Project Receives Nearly $100,000 from NEH

  January 15, 2020

  The Ivan Allen Archive Project at the Georgia Institute of Technology has received a two-year, $99,991 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to fund the integration of large-scale text processing and data visualization capabilities into the open-source Omeka platform.

  

• Georgia Tech Economics Doctoral Student Co-Authors Paper on Solar Geoengineering in ‘Nature Communications’

  Solar geoengineering—the intentional reflection of sunlight away from the Earth’s surface—may reduce income inequality among countries, according to a new paper co-authored by a Georgia Institute of Technology School of Economics Ph.D. student who conducted his research while a visiting student at the University of California San Diego.

• Remembering Economics Professor Fred Tarpley

  Fred Tarpley, who was on faculty at Georgia Tech for 36 years and retired as professor emeritus in the School of Economics in 1998, passed away November 30, 2019.

  

• John Walsh Study Ranks Among the 100 Most-Discussed Research Papers of 2019

  January 3, 2020

  More than 2.7 million research outputs were tracked in 2019 by Altmetric. Ranking among the Top 100 most-discussed research papers of the year was a study by Georgia Tech School of Public Policy Professor John Walsh and his co-authors. 

  

• Five from Ivan Allen Receive Presidents Undergraduate Research Awards (PURA)

  January 3, 2020

  Two students majoring in computational media, two in literature, media, and communication, and one in applied languages and intercultural studies were recipients of President’s Undergraduate Research Awards (PURA) this year. Ivan Allen College faculty also mentored two PURA winners from non-liberal arts disciplines on campus.

  

• Celebrating Science Fiction Writer Isaac Asimov’s Influence at Georgia Tech

  Jan. 2 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of influential science fiction author Isaac Asimov, whose hard-science approach to his craft sparked the imaginations of countless writers and scientists. In recent years, Asimov’s birthday has also become known as “Science Fiction Day.” In celebration of this centennial, we are taking a look at how Asimov influenced Georgia Institute of Technology faculty and students, and also offer a selection of Asimov-themed reading suggestions for Science Fiction Day.
